SICKNESS BENEFIT

 

This is a benefit for insured persons who cannot work because of illness.

 

WHO QUALIFIES:

 

(a)        A person between the ages of 16 and 60 years inclusive, who

 

(b)        has paid, or who has had paid on his/her behalf, at least twenty-six (26) contributions into Social Security; and at least eight (8) contributions in the thirteen (13) weeks before the illness, and

 

(c)        has been employed immediately before the illness.

 

Please note that:

 

(a)        A claim for Sickness Benefit must be supported by a medical certificate given by a medical practitioner/doctor.

 

(b)      Sickness Benefit will only be paid if illness lasts for more than three (3) consecutive days.

 

(c)        A person receiving Sickness Benefit should NOT work for any period for which benefit is paid.

 

 

WHEN TO CLAIM:

 

A claim for Sickness Benefit should be made within fifteen (15) days from the day on which the claimant was examined by a doctor.

 

The claimant should ask his/her doctor to complete a National Insurance Claim Form on the day that he/she is examined, and then take the form to the National Insurance Office.

 

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT:

 

An insured person will be paid sixty-five percent (65%) of his/her average weekly wages for up to 26 weeks.

 

N.B.  The benefit will only be paid if the person is not receiving full salary from his/her employer for the period of illness.

MATERNITY BENEFIT

 

Maternity Benefit is paid to a woman who is pregnant or who has given birth.

 

A.        MATERNITY ALLOWANCE

 

WHO QUALIFIES

 

(a)        A woman between the ages of 16 and 60 years , who

 

(b)        has been employed for at least 30 contribution weeks, and who has paid at least 20 weekly contributions immediately before the date of the claim.

 

WHEN TO CLAIM

 

The first claim for Maternity Allowance may be submitted not earlier than thirteen weeks beginning with the contribution week before that in which it is expected that the claimant will be confined.

 

After confinement the doctor should be asked to fill out a certificate of confinement form, which should be submitted to the National Insurance Office within four (4) weeks of the birth of the baby.

 

Please bear in mind that an insured person should not claim a benefit of this type for any week during which she is at work.

 

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT

 

A claimant will be paid sixty-five percent (65%) of her average weekly wages for a maximum of thirteen (13) consecutive weeks.

 

N.B.  The benefit will only be paid if the person is not receiving full salary from his/her employer while on leave.

 

B.     MATERNITY GRANT

WHO QUALIFIES

 

A woman can qualify for the Maternity Grant if she or her spouse has paid at least twenty (20) weekly contributions in the thirty (30) weeks immediately before the birth of a child.

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT

 

The current Maternity Grant is a single lump sum payment of $550.00 for each child born at one confinement.

 

WHEN TO CLAIM

 

A claim for Maternity Grant should be submitted within four (4) weeks of the birth of the baby.

INVALIDITY PENSION

 

WHO QUALIFIES

 

(a)        Anyone who has been medically declared an invalid and who is likely to be permanently disabled, and who

 

(b)        has paid at least one hundred and fifty (150) weekly contributions into the National Insurance Scheme, and is

 

(c)        under the age of sixty (60) years.

 

Invalidity Benefit may be paid if incapacity lasts longer than twenty-six (26) weeks.

 

WHEN TO CLAIM

 

A claim for Invalidity Benefit should be submitted within three (3) months of the date on which an insured person is medically certified as an invalid.

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT

 

A benefit of 30% to 60% of the average annual wages of the insured person, or a minimum of $60.00 per week will be paid for as long as the incapacity lasts or until the claimant reaches sixty (60) years of age at which point it converts to an age pension. The continued payment of benefit is subject to review at least every year.

 

B.     INVALIDITY GRANT

WHO QUALIFIES

 

(a)     Anyone who has been medically declared an invalid and who is likely to be permanently disabled, and who

 

(b)      has paid at least fifty (50) weekly contributions into the National Insurance Services and is

 

(c)                under the age of sixty (60) years.

 

AMOUNT OF GRANT

The amount of invalidity grant is a lump sum equal to six times the average weekly insurable earnings of the insured person for each complete fifty contributions paid or credited.

AGE BENEFIT

A.                 AGE PENSION

WHO QUALIFIES

(a)        Any person who is insured and is at least sixty (60) years of age, and who

 

(b)        has paid not less than one hundred and fifty weekly contributions.

 

(c)        has paid or been credited with not less than five hundred (500) weekly contributions.

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT

 

(a)        30% to 60% of the average wages of the three best contribution years or a minimum of $60.00 per week.

 

Rate of Age Pension:

 

1.         The annual rate of age pension shall be given sixteen per centum of the average annual insurable earnings of the insured person to which shall be added one per centum of his average annual insurable earnings for each complete twenty-five (25) weekly contributions paid by or credited to him in excess of the first one hundred and fifty weekly contributions and up to the first five hundred weeks, plus one half per centum of his average insurable earnings for each complete twenty-five weekly contributions paid or credited to him in excess of the first five hundred weeks.

 

 

B.  AGE GRANT

 

WHO QUALIFIES

(a)        An insured person who is at least 60 years of age, and who

(b)        has paid not less than fifty weekly contributions.

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT

 

A lump sum of six (6) times the average weekly wages for each fifty (50) weekly contribution paid.

 

C. REDUCED AGE PENSION

WHO QUALIFIES

 

Any person who is insured and is at the age of 37 years and over on the Appointed Day shall be eligible for age pension, when he/she

 

(a)        has attained the age of sixty years

 

(b)               has paid 150 contributions into the National Insurance Services

(c)                has paid an additional 25 weekly contributions for every year during which he/she was under the age of 50 years on the Appointed Day as described in the schedule below.

D. REFUND OF CONTRIBUTIONS TO CERTAIN ELDERLY ENTRANTS

 

An insured person who is at least sixty (60) years and has paid:

 

(a)        26 to 49 contributions may be refunded that element of the contributions; which represents invalidity, age and survivors benefit.

(b)        less than 26 contributions may be refunded the contribution actually paid by him/her.

                         

WHEN TO CLAIM

 

The claim should be submitted within three (3) months of the claimant's sixtieth (60) birthday.

SURVIVORS' BENEFIT

 

A Survivors' Benefit is payable to survivors of a deceased insured person who at the time of death:

 

(a)        could have satisfied the conditions for an invalidity pension or grant

(b)        was receiving invalidity or Age Pension;

(c)        was entitled to Age pension or grant.

 

WHO QUALIFIES

 

(a)                 The widow -    If she had been married to, or had cohabited with the deceased insured person for at least three (3) years.

 

If she is under the age of fifty (50) she will be paid the benefit for one year unless she is pregnant at the time of her husband's death or if she has children whose ages at the time of her husband's death will make her eligible for a pension for life.

 

If she is fifty (50) years of age or over she will receive a pension for life.

 

If she is under fifty years of age and she is an invalid, she will be paid a Survivor's pension during her invalidity.  She will continue to receive a pension for life if her invalidity ceases and she is over fifty (50) years.

 

The widow will continue to receive benefits as long as she satisfies the conditions or until she remarries or cohabits.

 

(b)               The widower - It he had been married to, or had cohabited with the deceased insured person for at least three (3) years.

 

If he is fifty (50) years of age or over he will receive a pension for life.

 

If he is under fifty years of age and he is an invalid, he will be paid a Survivor's pension during his invalidity.  He will continue to receive a pension for life if his invalidity ceases and he is over fifty (50) years.

 

The widower will continue to receive benefit as long as he satisfies the conditions or until he remarries or cohabits.

 

(c)        A child  -          Natural, Adopted, Step or Illegitimate;

Unmarried;

was living with the deceased;

was totally maintained by the deceased.

 

The child will receive benefit up to the age of 16 or up to age 18 if attending school or college. If the child is an invalid, he/she will receive the benefit for life.

 

 

A. SURVIVORS' PENSION

 

Weekly payments to the Survivors of a deceased insured person.

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT

 

(a)        Widow/Widower 75% of the age or invalidity pension in payment to the deceased insured person at the date of his death.

 

(b)        If the deceased person was not in receipt of age or invalidity pension he/she is paid 75% of the age pension earned up to the date of death.

 

(c)        25% of the age or invalidity pension in payment to the deceased person at the date of death; or amount of age pension earned up to the date of death.

 

(d)        Orphan pension - The amount payable is fifty percent (50%).

  B.  SURVIVORS' GRANT

 

A lump sum payment to the survivors of a deceased insured person.

 

WHEN TO CLAIM

 

A claim for Survivors' Benefit should be made within three (3) months of the date of death of the insured person, and should be accompanied by evidence of the relationship (marriage certificate, birth and death certificates, etc.).

 

BENEFIT FOR SURVIVING PARENTS

 

A benefit is payable to a surviving parent on the death of an insured person where

 

(a)        the parent received at least 50% of his/her income from the insured person.

 

(b)        where the parent is at least 60 years of age.

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT

 

50% of the age or invalidity pension in payment to the deceased person at the date of death, or amount of age pension earned up to the date of death.

FUNERAL GRANT

 

Funeral Grant is paid on the death of an insured person, an invalidity, or age pensioner, or his/her spouse or a dependant child (under age 16 or under age 18 if attending school or University full time, or an invalid) to any person who has met the funeral expenses of the deceased, or who gives the Director an undertaking in writing to pay the whole or part of the funeral expenses of the deceased.

 

WHO QUALIFIES

 

Anyone who is responsible for the funeral expenses of the deceased.  The Insured person must have been insured for at least twenty-six (26) weeks.

 

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT

 

The current maximum Funeral Grant is $3,600.00. On the death of a dependant child it is paid on the following scale:

On the death of the spouse of an age pensioner, invalidity pensioner or insured person the Funeral Grant is $1,900.00.

 

WHEN TO CLAIM

 

The claim for Funeral Grant must be submitted no later than six months after the death of the Insured person, or his/her spouse.

 

The claim form must be accompanied by the death certificate and all receipts for the funeral expenses. The receipts MUST be in the name of the person making the claim or an authorized representative.
