Can I claim Funeral Grant for an uninsured spouse? Yes. On the death of an uninsured spouse of an age pensioner, invalidity pensioner or insured person a Funeral Grant of $1800 is payable.
Why the NIS does not pay Sickness Benefit for the first 3 days? The NIS does not pay for the first 3 days. These days are called “waiting Days”. This prevents a worker from submitting any frivolous claim. Besides, the employer is supposed to pay the employee for the first 2 days. Also, the 3 “waiting Days” only apply to a first claim. If a subsequent claim is submitted within 8 weeks of the first, it will be treated as a linked claim, and this can continue up to 26 weeks.
Why are some persons denied Sickness Benefit from NIS? Sickness Benefit would be denied for any of the following reasons:
If I receive 65% of my income for Sickness Benefit or Maternity Benefit from the NIS, Is my employer required to pay me the remaining 35%? Yes, Once the employee is entitled to sick leave and maternity leave from his/her employer, then the 35% is payable by the employer.
If my spouse dies, would her parents and I receive Survivors’ Benefit? Survivors’ Benefit is not payable to both the surviving spouse and parents at the same time. Only the spouse will receive the benefit. However, if the deceased insured person does not have a spouse, then one surviving parent will receive the benefit (at least 50% of deceased insured person’s contributions. Parents must be over age 60 and must have been receiving substantial support from the deceased (at least 50%).

How does one know if his/her contributions are being paid at the office? He/She can come into our office periodically to check if the contributions are actually being paid.
Should a person change his/her occupation, should he/she apply for a new NIS number? No, once an NIS number is issued, it will remain yours for life. An NIS number will never be passed on or reissued.
What are the required documents when applying for an NIS card? In order to verify that the name and date of birth are correct, persons are asked to bring along their birth certificate or passport and in the case of a married woman, the marriage certificate.
How much should contributors pay? A total of 6% of insurable earnings should be made by each employer, of which the employee pays 2.5% and the employer 3.5%.
If I overpay contributions, will I be reimbursed? Yes, both employee and employer will be refunded.
Are deductions made and paid for temporary employees? Yes, they are bona fide employees, so they must be registered and have contributions paid on their behalf.
