Funeral Grant

What is it?

The Funeral Grant provides financial assistance for the burial expenses of the deceased. It is paid on the death of an insured person, invalidity, or age pensioner, or his/ or her spouse or a dependent child.

Who Qualifies?

Any person who has been insured with the NIS for at least twenty-six (26) weeks qualifies for this grant. It is payable to the person who has paid the expenses or who presents an undertaking in writing to pay the funeral expenses.

What is the Amount?

The amount given differs according to the former status of the deceased.
  • With respect to the death of an insured person, an invalidity pensioner, or age pensioner – $4,525.
  • With respect to the death of the spouse of an insured person, and invalidity pensioner, or age pensioner – $2,262.50.
With respect to the death of a dependent child of an insured person, and invalidity pensioner, or age pensioner based on the age of the child at death:

  • Funeral Grant with respect to Non-Contributory Assistance Age Pensioner (NAAP):
      1. NAAP Pensioner – $2,262.50
      2. Spouse of a NAAP Pensioner – $1,131.25

Please note: anyone who is responsbile for the funeral expenses of the deceased must bring the receipts and the death certificate to substantiate this.

How and When do you Claim?

  • A claim form must be submitted with the death certificate of the insured.
  • The claim for funeral grant must be submitted no later than six months after the death of the insured person.
  • Claims made after the death of the insured must be accompanied with receipts covering the cost of the funeral. The receipts must be in the name of the person making the claim or an authorised representative.

Please note that any funeral grant to be paid to the funeral home must be specifically stated in writing by the person who is undertaking the funeral.

Death at Sea

Funeral grant will only be paid following the submission of a certificate by the Attorney General’s Office (based on the Director’s discretion).
